Despite what school teachers and parents might have us believe, creative talent is in abundance. That’s not to say that artistic endeavours are fruitless – certainly engaging with music or dance or art, for example, has an enormous impact on the mind and emotions – but that despite our best attempts, we can’t all be lauded for our abilities. It stands to reason then that when someone comes along that’s not just good but rather outstanding in not one, but two creative fields, it’s easy to fall prey to jealousy. Thankfully for Sophie Lowe, she’s too darned sweet to hold a grudge against.
Best known to Australian audiences for her role as an actor in films such as Beautiful Kate (2009) and Adore (2013), and television programs including The Slap (2011) and The Returned (2015), Ms Lowe has for several years also been working as a musician under the moniker SOLO (the first two characters of her first and last names), for which she built a significant audience. Ms Lowe recently released a single, Understand, under the guise of her own name, a sampling from a new EP she will release next month.
“I’ve always felt that I would do something with music one day,” explains Ms Lowe of her return. “I guess I was waiting for myself to feel comfortable enough to start releasing music. I am still just as focused on my acting, but now I get to do something else that I also love.” That music finds itself somewhere between gentle acoustic and electronica, a sort of Haim-esque fusion of lilting lyricism and early-hours dance. “I just think of what I am trying to say in each song and how it makes me feel,” she says of the music composition process. “I think my sound is however I’m feeling at the time I write it, and I always try to write truthfully because my voice won’t connect otherwise.”
Does she see any correlation between her two passions? “People would say that because I was an actor I should be used to performing, but I was so nervous to sing on stage,” she says. “I’ve never done a play before, so being on stage singing my own songs was so scary. But the more I play the less nervous I get, and I enjoy it so much more now.”
Ms Lowe will star in new ABC series The Beautiful Lie, which premieres this Sunday evening. Understand is available on iTunes.
